Free Web Hosting or Paid?

Free web hosting
provides extremely limited capacity and services. And while the free web host may not be charging you anything for hosting your web site, they still must generate revenue to stay in business.

The usual way they do this is by inserting paid ads on your website. You'll rarely have any say over nature of the ads posted on your site. That's the price you'll have to pay for "free" web hosting.

The Price of Freedom

Furthermore, to limit the amount of resources you're able to use, a free web host may impose restrictions on the types of content you're allowed to post to your site. For example, you may not be permitted to offer anything for sale on your web site.

Obviously that's not going to work if you intend to conduct business on your web site. Or you may not be allowed to post videos or music files which take up a lot of storage space and use a great deal of bandwidth when your visitors access them.

Poof!

Finally, and most concerning, is that your web site might simply vanish without warning from the Internet. Companies that provide free webhosting pop up practically every day, but they also disappear with alarming regularity.

When your free web hosting company disappears, your web site disappears with it. So if you intend to put any real effort into developing a web site, whether for personal or business use, you'd better select a free but reliable web host and not fall for the come-ons of th emany self-serving free web hosting companies.

Prices vary widely based on the resources provided in each hosting plan. Some hosting companies offer rates from just a few dollars a month. Others charge as much as $50 or more.

Caveat Emptor

High prices are not always indicative of high quality service. Even a moderately priced or downright cheap web host can offer a very reliable, stable environment which permits your website to be available 24/7 for years.

As a general guideline, however, if you pay more for your hosting plan the you'll get more. In return for higher rates you'll receive more storage and greater bandwidth for transferring files and other information between your web site and the Internet.

In addition, higher prices should also be accompanied by a broader range of services such as databases, auto-responders, email accounts, and the capability to install your own scripts.

Want to Sleep Well?

Higher rates should also mean a more responsive technical support team should your web site experience any problems and other technical issues. You are unlikely to see any of these benefits if you rely on free web hosting.
