After Domain Name Registration,
Connect to your Host Server

With domain name registration completed,
what's next? Well, you've taken the first important step toward getting your web site onto the Internet by purchasing a domain name. At that point it is registered on the registrar's domain name server.

The domain name registration company will typically redirect requests for your domain name to an error page or an "Under Construction" page until you make arrangements for domain name hosting either with the registrar or with another web hosting company.

There is no deadline for engaging a web host after obtaining your domain name. In fact, some people and companies buy domain names and never create websites for them.

Stuck in Park?

The reason they "park" these domains is either to earn money from pay per click advertising and/or to speculate on the value of the domain name with a view to selling it for a profit.

Most people, however, buy domain names because they plan to build websites. In order to do that you must open an account with a web hosting company and transfer your domain to their server.

Tell Your Registrar Where To Go

Part of the process of getting your web site ready to be published the Web is to inform the company that handled your domain registration of your web host's DNS so that the registrar can create a "pointer" to your new web server.

DNS configurations look like this:

Primary NameServer: NS1.NEWDNS.COM (123.45.67.8)
Secondary NameServer: NS2.NEWDNS.COM (123.45.68.9)

This domain name server information will be provided by your web hosting company when you sign up for one of their hosting packages. If you have any trouble finding the DNS, simply contact your web host's technical support and ask for it.

Try The Combo Plate

Once you have the DNS information you can usually enter it yourself into your account on the website of your registrar. It's a bit simpler, of course, if you obtained your domain name from your web hosting company as they will usually make all the needed changes when they set up your account.

Hurry Up and Wait

When you first register or modify your domain name server, such as when changing web hosts, you may have to wait at least 24 hours before your website can be accessed globally. This is because domain name registration actually occurs in a database that is distributed across thousands of computers around the world.

Each computer only stores a fraction of the total database in its cache so, if they receive a request for an unrecognized URL, it gets passed to another server in the database network until they find the correct DNS information.
